Coral Bleaching

Coral reefs are not only pretty-looking organisms, they are also very important to our planet! Here are some big words to think about…

Zooxanthellae = tiny marine algae that provide up to 90% of the energy that corals require to grow and reproduce.

Coral Bleaching = The breakdown of the relationship between a coral host and its zooxanthellae, causing the coral to lose its colour, ‘turn’ white and eventually die.

Like how deforestation has multiple ramifications, coral bleaching (mostly due to increasing water temperatures) can have serious effects on marine life. It can also be an indicator for climate change!
